Venue Description:

The Rubens Hotel was constructed in 1912 and opened in 1915 as a hostel for debutantes attending the season at Buckingham Palace.

In the late 20s the building became a hotel, managed by a Mr Stanley Caldicott Kerr. The Managing Director of the Company “Rubens Rembrandt” Associated Hotels Limited was a Mr. S.F. Dyke, so explaining the hotels connections with a Dutch Family and hence naming the Function Rooms and Restaurant after Dutch Masters.

The Rubens has been operated as a hotel ever since, apart from a brief period during World War 2, when it was commandeered as the headquarters of the Polish forces in England. The Polish Prime Minister, General Sikorski, was in residence at the Hotel from 1940 to 1943. Another famous personality of his era, Charles de Gaulle, stayed at the Hotel on 17th June 1940.

The Hotel later became part of Grand Metropolitan Hotels and was taken over by Sarova Hotels in 1980.

On 16th April 1977 The Rubens was taken over by The Red Carnation Hotel Group and became The Rubens at the Palace. During 1998 over £3 million was invested in the properties’ refurbishment and upgrading to 4 Star Service.
